WE KNOW IT FEELS CRAZY, but you already need to think about your housing situation for next year if you plan on living off-campus!  The best locations are typically available to everyone, but you have to act early.  Finding roommates and deciding where you might want to live next year may take a while, so don’t delay!

As movers in Bloomington, we get to see the inside of every apartment complex.  We’ve waited in elevator lines at the downtown high-rises, squeezed couches upstairs in townhouses, and lost shoes to the mud at apartments that weren’t quite finished with construction.

WHAT DID WE LEARN?  Well, to begin, you should never wear new shoes to work.  But, more importantly, we became encyclopedias of knowledge for Bloomington apartments.

In this year’s Indiana University apartment guide, we are simply publishing a directory of options for housing and apartments in Bloomington with basic information.  In future years, we look forward to adding insider tips from our Bloomington movers and extra information.

HOW IS THE GUIDE ORGANIZED?  This guide has been split into two main sections: large properties and smaller properties.  The larger properties are also sorted by which part of Bloomington they are located in.

Properties are listed with a basic rent range.  $ is the lowest monthly rent, often under $500/month, while $$$$ indicates more than $1000/month.

Larger properties and apartments in Bloomington often have expanded amenities and sometimes are available fully-furnished.  These more expensive properties may even come with shuttles to campus, a pool, and a gym.  Some of the newest buildings even have game rooms, basketball courts, and tanning booths.  The trade-off is that you’ll have a lot more neighbors using the amenities.  Bloomington apartment complexes and large buildings may be a little noisier, but you can often look forward to being in the middle of the action.

DOWNTOWN

Most of the major downtown apartment complexes are clustered near Walnut Street and Kirkwood Avenue.  Downtown apartments boast a central location that is close to campus and the stadium, as well as being in the middle of the most popular restaurants and bars in Bloomington.  This location also means that apartments downtown are some of the most expensive in the city.  But, can you really put a price on living in the middle of the action?

NORTH

Bloomington apartments on the north-side are known for their proximity to the stadium.  Are you a Hoosier sports fan?  Do you enjoy tailgating?  Many of these locations are less than a five minute walk from both Memorial Stadium and Assembly Hall.  The IU pool, soccer stadium, and fraternities are also nearby, as well as many University buildings, like the Kelley School of Business and Herman B. Wells Library.

SOUTH

Apartments in Bloomington’s south-side neighborhoods provide a quieter living situation.  While a couple of these options are too far to walk, most of these locations are only a short walk to campus, especially the Jacobs School of Music, the Maurer School of Law, and the Chemistry buildings.  These apartments are nestled in Bloomington’s more residential neighborhoods, and are often closer to resources like grocery stores.  The southern neighborhoods in Bloomington are also typically older, so often these apartments are less expensive than those located downtown.

EAST

East-side apartments in Bloomington are a little further from campus, but the properties often offer additional amenities including pools, tennis courts, and volleyball courts.  Due to the distance from campus, many properties also include regular shuttles to campus.  Additionally, most apartments in this part of town have ample parking for residents and guests.  The east-side apartments also have easy access to places like box stores, grocery stores, and many chain restaurants near the mall.

WEST

The west-side of Bloomington has had a lot of development over the past several years.  While these Bloomington apartments may be a little further away, many of the properties are newer construction.  Like east-side apartments, many west-side locations are further and offer free transportation to campus.  Despite being on the edge of town, the west side of Bloomington offers many stores and restaurants that are easily accessible by car.  Most properties have plenty of parking for residents and guests.  One of the perks of many west-side locations is that you have easy access to State Road 37/Interstate 69, which could be helpful if you have to travel or go home for weekends.
