OVER THE SUMMER

If you plan ahead during the summer, you can get a lot of preparations figured out ahead of time.  It will be helpful to think about class and living situations in a calm environment.  Even if all you do is read through important academic deadlines, you can save yourself a lot of headache in the future.

MAKE A PLAN NOW SO THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO WHEN YOU’RE BUSY

When we talk to college graduates, they often look back in amazement at their level of activity in college. Students keep track of a dizzying array of classes, activities, jobs, and social schedules.

With so many new activities and friends, your weekdays will be packed to the brim, and you’ll have plans every weekend. That makes it even more important to make sure you have a good weekly plan. Sticking to a schedule will help your physical and mental performance, and is closely correlated with academic success.

“Once classes starts things get hectic very fast. So, I recommend taking a few moments in advance to create a weekly schedule and then sticking to it! Include all your weekly activities like classes, club and group meetings, and even regular study times. By planning regular study times, you’ll stay ‘on track’ academically.”

We recommend getting in the habit of using a calendar now, so that you don’t forget any deadlines or meetings. Use an app or program that you can access from both your computer and your phone, to make sure you can easily add things on the run or during class. We recommend using Google Calendar, which has these features and can connect with Gmail to automatically record confirmation emails.

ADD THESE REMINDERS TO YOUR CALENDAR SO YOU DON’T FORGET

Every school’s deadlines are different, so make sure to check your school’s website.

Class Enrollment Opens (August)

We don’t actually think you’ll forget the first day you get to sign up for classes, but it’s good to get into the habit of keeping an organized calendar.

Last Day To Drop Classes (September-October)

Most schools allow you to try out classes before committing to them. Don’t feel bad switching things before this date! That’s what this option is for.

Family Holidays and Birthdays

Call your mom on her birthday! Just because you’re away from home doesn’t mean that you don’t have any responsibilities. Set all of the important dates in your calendar so that you receive a reminder. Better yet, go to Postable.com and schedule delivery dates of hand-written greeting cards.

Start Internship or Job Search

Most students don’t start an internship until the summer after Sophmore year, but you don’t want to miss application deadlines, because many are early.  Some companies collect resumes at your school’s first semester career fair.  Most companies will be searching for candidates 5-8 months before the start date.

First Football Game (September)

If your college is lucky enough to have a good athletics program, take advantage of it! Football is the first major sports season of the school year, and you’ll want to mark the first day of tailgating!  Even if you don’t like football, surely you like grilling and lawn games.

Begin The Search For Next Year’s Living Situation (November)

We know it’s early to start planning next year’s college move-in day, but if you plan on living off-campus, next year, you’ll need to start figuring things out quickly.  Just set the alarm for now so that you can forget about it.  The best locations are typically up for grabs each year, but you have to act early.

Start Planning For Spring Break (October)

The best deals of vacation packages and flights are 30-60 days out.  We recommend comparing options at that point so that you can have a memorable, reasonably-priced vacation, and can arrange things before friends make other plans.

Application For Going Abroad (October or January)

Are you planning on going abroad this year or next year? Add the application deadlines to your calendar so that you don’t miss the opportunity to spend a semester abroad!

Rush A Fraternity Or Sorority (August or January)

While the dates of rush vary from school to school, it typically occurs at the beginning of the semester.  We recommend taking advantage of the free meals and activities.  Make sure to check the schedule ahead of time, because at some schools rush occurs during school breaks.
